Our Technology

Platform Strains Development

​These strains enable efficient and sustainable industrial processes, a key necessity for establishing the bioeconomy.

Metabolite Sensor Strains as Engineering Tools

Our custom-made sensor strains support the engineering process by growing only when a metabolic pathway or enzymatic activity produces the necessary metabolites. To achieve this, we divide metabolism into functional modules around the carbon, electron, nitrogen, and energy compounds of the cell.

Growth-Coupled Bioproduction

We tailor metabolic pathways so that microbial growth is tied to the production of valuable chemicals and fuels. This growth-coupling method ensures that metabolism produces an obligatory product alongside biomass, driving efficient production as the organism can only grow by producing.

Sustainable Carbon Sources

We engineer microbes to utilize substrates like lignocellulosic sugars, lignin, CO2, methanol, and formate for growth and bioproduction. This approach develops solutions necessary for the establishing of a circular bioeconomy by converting waste and renewable resources into valuable compounds, enhancing sustainability.

In Vivo Enzyme Engineering

We utilize sensor strains to couple enzymatic functions to the organism’s growth. This strategy enables rapid screening of enzyme libraries and accelerates the development of optimized catalytic activities, allowing to couple to adaptive evolution and hypermutation techniques.

Our Inspiration

The Arren Bar-Even Legacy

The Lindlich Lab strives to continue what was started by Arren Bar-Even as an independent research group in 2015 at the Max-Planck-Institute for Molecular Plant Physiology in Potsdam.

At the MPI, Arren created a research environment that is unparalleled in the scientific community. From Bachelor student to PostDoc, everyone was encouraged to actively participate in group meetings, social activities and projects that push the boundaries of synthetic metabolism. Throughout the years, the Bar-Even group was open to everyone, independent of their race, sexual orientation, ethical or social background. Removing restrictions imposed by hierarchies and unnecessary strictness, coming to work felt like following a passion with the opportunity to grow scientifically and as a person. This is what being part of the Bar-Even family still means for us today.
